How many times does it happen that you end up regretting your similar kind of spends?

Looking at your credit card statement and trying to understand how can you stop that certain spending behaviour or habit.
You keep making resolutions not to repeat a certain behaviour or habit but still end up doing the exact same thing in similar situation at a later point in time.
These repetitive behaviours could be something that you
Did in haste
Couldn’t do because of fear
Want to stop but keep doing repetitively
It’s frustrating, when you know that you need to curtail a certain behaviour to move forward towards your financial goals and you are also trying different ways to do so without even a glimpse of success.
Have you ever wondered why you keep doing the same things that you regret and take resolve to not do next time?
It’s because of the mental shortcuts that your brain has created!
These mental shortcuts are deeply ingrained in your brain, so much so, that you don’t seem to even notice them or realise that more than 95% of your decisions are on auto-pilot.
There are 3 main reasons due to which brain creates shortcuts –
Finding patterns – everyone is interested in knowing what came first egg or chicken because human brain has a tendency to try and find causal relationships between things and events. Such a strong tendency that sometimes it ends up finding patterns in even completely unrelated events.
Feeling secure – remember the last time you were super hopeful but sudden negative news led to 180-degree turnaround in your emotions… How did that make you feel? A sudden feeling of being insecure and vulnerable overtakes you in such times.
Conserving energy – what will happen, if you try to use all available information to make even smaller everyday decisions like brushing your teeth, polishing your shoes, etc.? Well, your brain will end up consuming a lot more energy than your body can generate.
Since, human brain has been designed to protect your body & mind, it’s just trying to do its job by creating these shortcuts.
To stop repeating the spends that you end up regretting you need to overcome the hidden biases behind that behaviour or habit.
The first step towards breaking these repetitive patterns is to discover the hidden biases (mental shortcuts) behind them.
