Is your habit relapse trying to tell you something? What can you do to avoid relapsing into old habits?

One of the things that we all suffer with is relapsing into old habits. Those old habits that you changed because they weren’t helping, rather they were hampering your progress. But somehow, they keep coming back.

You would have tried many tips, tricks and plans to get over those habits but everything fails after some initial success.

What is happening? Why you aren’t able to make permanent habit changes?

In most cases. the reason is one of the below mentioned factors –

  • Misplaced motivations – quick habit changes are made without understanding your true motivations for wanting to change which finally leads to relapse

  • Under-preparedness – tips and tricks can get you started with a new habit but won’t keep you at it for long as they don’t prepare you for the roadblock you will face along the way

  • Misaligned thoughts-actions – your subconscious mind has certain rules that got created over years and that are your mind’s go to rule-book. Habit changes made in a hurry tend to ignore or bypass the rule book. This creates an unsettling feeling over time and leads to relapse

  • Suppressed emotional needs – everything that you do brings a certain emotional satisfaction either the act or the result. When you suddenly change a habit without finding a replacement for the emotional need being met, it is bound to backfire at some point and lead to a relapse.

Every relapse is telling you something. It’s trying to point to a need that wasn’t addressed during the habit change process. The need could be related to your emotions, individual motivations/ aspirations, abilities, sub-conscious beliefs, etc. Hence, if you want to bring a permanent habit change that stays with you forever you need to give it time and good thought to address all the above-mentioned factors.
